A Story About Bereavement Care
Ilene and George had been married for about 15 years when George was diagnosed with carcinoid tumors, a metastatic cancer that moved very slowly through his body. After four years of treatment with an oncologist, the couple sought out a palliative care specialist who made a referral for home-based palliative care with Central Vermont Home Health & Hospice. For the final year of George’s life, the couple’s home health nurse created an atmosphere of positivity and laughter that gave George strength and allowed the husband and wife to focus on one another and to bond in a way that they never had. The relationship with CVHHH has continued for Ilene with one-on-one bereavement counseling with Ginny Fry. Ilene credits the bereavement support—which she now seeks out every three months—with helping her make sense of what she felt was crazy in her life after George passed. It has also helped Ilene find the strength and understanding to move forward. Ilene only wishes that George could have known Ginny. She knows that he would have appreciated her as much as she does.
