Wendy, Duxbury
Wendy has been volunteering with CVHHH’s hospice program, providing companionship to community members, since 2025.
Why did you choose to volunteer with CVHHH?
I have always been drawn to helping others and wanted to do something that truly matters. I believe that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity at the end of life. I am deeply grateful for the care my parents received in hospice. The staff and volunteers played a significant role in allowing them to spend their final days at home. The support I received from CVHHH made such a difference and led me to giving back as a volunteer.
What has surprised you about volunteering with hospice?
I was at first concerned that volunteering for CVHHH could be emotionally difficult for me. Instead, I experienced a deep connection with the patients and their families. It surprised me that it made me more aware of what matters most in life, leading to a sense of peace and gratitude.
What qualities should a hospice volunteer have?
Having empathy and patience, being able to know when to engage or give space, being present and being a good listener are some qualities that I feel make volunteering a good experience for all involved. Volunteers should have the ability to take care of themselves emotionally as well.
Why do people choose to receive care at home?
Comfort, privacy, familiarity, and peace, along with being surrounded by loved ones may be some reasons people choose to receive care at home.
